Blames Government’s Lethargy for Rise and Continued Aggression of Neighbouring States

DIPHU, Feb 10: ASDC has slammed Assam Government for doing nothing against neighbouring states for encroaching huge areas of land belonging to the Karbi Anglong district. This was stated in a press statement issued by ASDC general secretary Jotson Bey.

In its press statement the regional party charged that Government of Meghalaya has continued encroachment of some areas of West Karbi Anglong illegally and more recently, around 3 kilometres road was constructed at Rongkhelan area very much under Jirikindeng police station, West Karbi Anglong, Assam.

“The ASDC vehemently condemned and opposed such illegal and unconstitutional activities pursued by the Government of Meghalaya and Nagaland and also urged upon to stop such attempt in the interest of keeping mutual respects and peace and tranquility,” charged the party. The regional party has condemned the state government for their continued inaction and apathy towards the border protection issue charging them of leading to rise of illegal encroachments carried out by both the government of two neighbouring states in the inter- state border areas of Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong bordering Meghalaya and Nagaland.

The regional party has also request HAD Minister Sum Ronghang and the MP Horen Sing Bey and MLAs from Assam hills areas to take up the matter with their party leaders and their governments in the state and at the centre to bring permanent solution and also to take up development projects in the inter-state border areas in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong Districts from the inter-state border development funds.

Further, the regional party also urged upon the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council to earmark fund for taking projects in border areas in the interest of protecting border areas and to raise the minimum standard of living of the people. “The tense situations and groups clashes took place in the inter-state border areas with Meghalaya and Nagaland became matters of serious concerned to every citizen of Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong during the last fifty years. Because those tense situations and groups clashes were took place times to times due to the illegal encroachment pursued by the Government of Meghalaya and Nagaland during the last fifty years,” the party added. The party also reminded that some areas of Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong district bordering Nagaland and Meghalaya have been created as ‘disputed area’ which is primarily due to the of the failure on the state government to protect and develop inter-state border areas properly.

The party said that it has submitted a memorandum to the governor of Assam on 3rd December, 2019, requesting him to direct the Government of Assam to take adequate steps to check illegal encroachment and influx in border areas but did nothing.

The ASDC concluded its press statement urging the state government and the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, to stop the construction of PWD road by Meghalaya at border areas in Rongkhelan inside West Karbi Anglong to erect border pillars along the boundaries as notified in 1951 during the creation of the United Mikir and North Cachar Hills Autonomous District for the permanent solution of the border issues with both Meghalaya and Nagaland.
