HAFLONG, Aug 12: The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is all set to renovate the NH 54 road in Dima Hasao that has been badly damaged due to persistent rainfall in the past few weeks.
It is reported that NH 54 road near Kalachand, 40 kilometres from Haflong in Dima Hasao district is badly damaged as the road caved in to 3.5 meters deep.
One side of the four lanes collapsed on Friday and the condition worsened when the road was badly damaged for another 130 meters. The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) under the supervision of Regional Officer, Lumding division Alok Kumar immediately initiated the restoration work by engaging construction firm and M.R Construction and told them to start the work immediately.
It may be mentioned that the 25 kilometers stretch of NH 54 between Jatinga and Harangajao is the worst affected due to apathy of the concerned authority.
Sources informed that after JKM company failed to complete the NH 54, the NHAI authority assigned the contract to Silchar based construction firm ‘Lakshmi Motors’ for enhancement of the 25km road between Jatinga and Harangajao with an allocation of Rs 1.92 crores but the firm failed to produce satisfactory results.
“Fund for renovation was paid in full but the construction is not as per specification. It is just few months and the road is already very badly damaged,” sources said.
