Phoolman Chaudhury urges Govt to Initiate Process for Addressing IP Issues of Karbi Anglong
DIPHU, Feb 21: Asia Representative UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues Phoolman Chaudhury urge upon the government to initiate process related to Article 244 (A) of the Constitution of India for the Karbis and other indigenous people of the hill districts of Karbi Anglong. This was expressed at a press meet convened at Karbi Anglong Sports Association (KASA) Conference Hall in Diphu today.
Asia Representative was accompanied by Karbi Human Rights Watch (KHRW) convener Pankaj Teron and his press aide Hari Paudel. During his address to the local media, Chaudhury stated that UN Permanent Forum focuses on six mandated areas education, social, development, environment, culture, and human rights. Further he informed the duty of the forum is to provide expert advice and recommendation on the issues of indigenous people to the Economic and Social Council and to other agencies of the United Nations. He said that the other work of the Forum is to raise awareness, promote, integration and coordination of the activities within the UN agencies. Prepare and dissemination of information related to the issues of the IPs promote respect for the full application of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) which is an international instrument adopted by the United Nations on September 13, 2007, to enshrine the rights that “constitute the minimum standards for the survival, dignity and well-being of the indigenous peoples of the world.
Chaudhury said that the UN wants to ensure the rights of the indigenous people across the world and therefore the issues related to the indigenous people of Karbi Anglong would be taken up at the international forum.
On the issues of Karbi Anglong, Chaudhury said that the government should seriously and honestly take up the issues of tribal people of Karbi Anglong districts and more importantly address autonomous state under 244 (A) of the Constitution of India which has been the decade long demand and aspiration of the hill districts of Assam. He also expressed his happiness of the visit to find rich in culture of the Karbis and rich natural resources of their land which he said are to be promoted and so identity are protected and shared his hope to highlight and take up at the UN Forum.
It may be mentioned that Phoolman Chaudhury, Asia Representative of United Nations (UN) Permanent Forum on Indigenous issues, who has been invited during the 45th Karbi Youth Festival, 2019, under the initiative of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) CEM Tuliram Ronghang and Deputy Chairman Ritesh Inghi to acquaint with the various issues of the indigenous people of Karbi Anglong district.
