APHLC Leaders meet Governor to urge Intervention on Several issues


DIPHU, Feb 13: In pursuance of its commitment, the All Party Hills Leaders Conference (APHLC) leaders met Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi on Tueday urging him to exercise his special powers following the failure of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) on matters related to framing of laws under Sixth Schedule within the specified time frame. This was informed in a press statement issued by APHLC spokesman Angtong Engti here today.

The APHLC team comprising of its president Mr. J.I. Kathar (Rtd. I.A.S.) along with Mr. Sagar Tisso (Secy. i/c Finance), spokesman Angtong Engti, legal secretary Samson Teron, organizing secretary Kursing Timung, and Dhrubo Hojai and Golan Daulaguphu both from N.C. Hills District met the Governor Jagdish Mukhi, at Raj Bhawan, Guwahati on Tuesday.

During the brief meeting, the party leaders apprised him status of KAAC on the issue of framing acts and rules with related to KAAC election under Sixth Schedule to the Constitution of India and its failure to pursue the Gauhati High Court’s directives. The team also highlighted other issues including holding of illegal Town Committee Election in Karbi Anglong, which they pointed out, was not carried as per the act and rules. The APHLC leaders also acquainted the Governor about draconic Mikir Hills (Land & Revenue) Act 1953 and Mikir Hills (Transfer of land) Act. 1959, and express great concern about the lack of schools, closures of existing primary schools which they pointed out was indirectly leading to increasing child trafficking cases in the hill districts of Karbi Anglong.

The party leaders stated that Governor gave them assurance on the various issues highlighted through a memorandum submitted to him including exercise of his powers of influences for the proper functioning of the hill district according as per the guidance of the constitution of the land.
