DIPHU, Feb 06: The Hills Progressive Youth Association (HPYA) on Wednesday submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner of Karbi Anglong Mukul Ch. Saikia on illegal extraction of coal from different coal deposits/reserves in Karbi Anglong and transporting it to different places and strongly urged the district administration to be more vigil on the whole matter, curb and discourage the illegal trade practices by taking stringent action against the involved persons.
HPYA stated that rampant coal mining is carried out in areas like Klurdung, Langmili, Disobai, Disama, Koilamati, Nambor area and Dillai (Koilajan) areas.
“Earlier, we had brought before your kind notice about this subject and initially we have also seen the action taken by the concerned department by launching actions against the illegal extractions of coal from the said areas in the district,” stated the memo.
However, such initiative seemed to have been withdrawn and the department officials were quiet on the issue. There is no sign of initiative from the concerned department in controlling this illegal trade. We demand that more efforts are needed to be ensured in order to curb the menace of coal extractions before it is too late.
