DIPHU, Jan 12: The Karbi Student’s Association (KSA), Manja Head Branch organised ‘Mass Awareness on Land Rights’ programme at Manja Dengrali playground on Thursday last.
The awareness programme was attended KSA Central Committee President Bijoy Bey, Asstt. General Secretary Bishwajit Teron, Asstt. General Secretary Thangsing Timung, Organising Secretary Raju Ingti, Diphu Regional Committee President Norsing Ingti, Manja Bazaar Committee Secretary, SGB and village headmen from different villages in the area.
Speaking at the meeting the KSA leaders explained the urgent need and awareness of selling of land to non-tribals. “Karbi Anglong is protected by the Sixth Schedule to the Indian Constitution and it is clearly mentioned that the area is ‘tribal area’ therefore the non-tribal have no land rights in Karbi Anglong. They can do business with due permission from Council authority but buying land and to settle permanently would be gross violation of the Sixth Schedule. If we receive any information on selling of land to outsider by any of the tribal communities in Karbi Anglong we will be compelled to take action against the sellers and buyers too,” warned the KSA leaders.
They also explained that today Assam is on the boil over Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 and strongly protest the passing of the Bill because the Centre is trying to wipe out the indigenous communities of Assam and diplomatically trying to grab the tribes’ land in the name of development and other purpose which is a matter of great concern.
