DIPHU, Jan 11: The state of Assam has witnessed another bandh within three days amid the rising agitation against the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 on Friday. The bandh was called by Coordination Committee of the Tribal Organizations of Assam (CCTOA) as a protest against the Constitution (Schedule Tribes) Amendment Bill, 2019 and in Karbi Anglong it was supported by Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC) and their frontal organizations for granting ST (H) status to Bodo community living in the hill districts, ST status to 6 communities in Assam and against Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.
In Bodoland Territorial Area Districts (BTAD) such as Kokrajhar, Udalguri, Baksa and Chirang, Bongaigaon, besides in tribal-dominated areas of Morigaon, Nagaon, Hojai, Dima Hasao, Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong districts were seen a deserted look due to the strike by CCTOA.
Bandh supporters attempted to block movement of vehicles on National Highways and other roads by burning tyres and laying tree trunks in the early hours of the bandh, police sources said.
CCTOA sources said that with this move to accord ST status to six communities -Ahoms, Morans, Mottocks, Chutiyas, Koch-Rajbongshis and Tea community. “The BJP led NDA government at the Centre and in the State has made a plot to eliminate the genuine indigenous tribal in the State,” said CCTOA leaders.
On the other hand, the ASDC statement added that the BJP cannot be allowed to grant a single tribe (read the Bodos) the right to enjoy dual benefits of ST (Plain) (P) and ST (H). “This attempt made by the BJP led Union Government to exterminate the hills tribes will not be taken for granted. The BJP shall have to pay a heavy price for it. The attempt to suffocate will be ultimately thwarted by the hill peoples and a befitting reply will be given to the BJP in the coming days,” said Holiram Terang, president ASDC.
During the bandh little movement of private and emergency vehicles were seen in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong districts while all business establishment, financial institutions and educational institutions were closed.
