Sngi Lumlang Celebrated at Jatinga in Dima Hasao


HAFLONG, Jan 08: The Jaintia community residing in Dima Hasao District of Assam today centrally celebrated ‘SNGI LUMLANG’ (post harvesting festival) at Jatinga (around 9 km from district HQ Haflong) with all customary zeal and delight.

A day long programme was organized today at Jatinga football field in Jatinga where Chief Guest NCHAC EM Amendu Hojai hoisted the flag in presence of huge gathering. This was followed by a welcome song, dances and other variety of colorful program performed by youths and distribution of cash and certificates for students who excelled in academic performance.

The programme was also attended by special invitees Meghalaya MLAs Marcos Marak and S.J.C Momin, 11 Assam Rifles Major Ajay Singh Rathore, Captain Rituraj Singh and dignitaries from the district as well as from various part of Meghalaya.
In Jaintia language Sngi Lumlang means “get-together” or “togetherness” which is being celebrated every year since 2012.

The festival also signifies the rich cultural heritage and retains the customs and traditions of the Jaintia Community. The 7th of January been declared as local holiday by the N.C. Hills Autonomous Council for the celebration of Sngi Lumlang festival in 2013.

‘SNGI LUMLANG’ is a significant festival of ‘Jaintia’ or ‘Pnar’ community with an aim to revive culture, customs and tradition of the Jaintia after a long gap of several decades as the festival had been celebrated till 1936 since they tie up the Christianity and some opined that celebration of such festival was wastage of time.

After a long discussion and debates on celebration of the festival with all the Jaintia Gaon Buras of Dima Hasao and active support of the N.C Hills Autonomous Council the festival is being celebrated since 2012.
