The government passed the Citizenship Bill in the Lok Sabha amid protests by the opposition.

The bandh supported by 24+ organizations, Karbi Students Association (KSA) and other political party in both Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong districts brought life to a standstill including the two district headquarters. Only emergency vehicles are seen plying on the road and all government and non-government establishment, financial institution and shops were seen shutter down.

On the other hand, in the midst of bandh called by various organizations in the district and also in support of the bandh called by NESO, the authority of KAAC has conducted Town Committee election in all the nine towns today.

The bandh supporters who were the member of 24+ organizations, KSA and AASU were picking up by the police from different locations and were taken to police stations.

Sources added that at least seven persons were injured, some with gunshot wounds, on Tuesday in West Tripura district, about 15 km from here, when police and paramilitary jawans resorted to lathi-charge and opened fire in the air to disperse Citizenship Bill protesters.

Those injured included Tripura State Rifles (TSR) personnel and six Twipra Student Federation (TSF) members who blocked the Assam-Agartala National Highway at Madhabbari in Jirania police station area of the district to oppose the Bill, a senior police officer said.

It can be mentioned that this is the first time in ten years that the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has called for a bandh. This is also the first time since independence that the entire Northeast region is observing a unified bandh for a common cause.
