KSA takes Protest Rally Against Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 at Hamren

HAMREN, Jan 08: The Karbi Student Association (KSA) and other social organizations took a protest rally against the bid of the Union Government to bring amendment to the Citizenship Act of the country and demanded immediate withdrawal of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.

Along with the rest of Northeast India, large numbers of protesters have participated in the rally in Hamren town today by shouting ‘Narendra Modi go back’, ‘BJP go back’ ‘Bangladeshis go back’.

During the protest rally, KSA Hamren Head Branch President Prasanta Engti along with other eight KSA members was arrested by Hamren Police.

The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) along with 30 other organizations too called for a state-wide 11 hours shutdown on Tuesday, from 5 am to 4 pm, protesting against the scheduled tabling of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 in Parliament. A bill seeking to provide Indian citizenship to non-Muslims from Bangaldesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan was approved by the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

The government introduced the Citizenship Bill in the Lok Sabha amid protests by the opposition.
