HALFLONG, Dec 12: Students’ organizations of Dima Hasao district comprising of Dimasa Students’ Union (DSU), Hmar Students’ Association (HAS), All Biate Students’ Association and Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in demand for immediate implementation of Article 244 (A) of the Constitution of India and immediate scrapping of the controversial Clause-8 of BLT Accord. The joint memorandum to PM Modi was submitted through the Deputy Commissioner of the district here today.
In its joint memorandum the students’ organizations of four tribes has urged upon the Prime Minister Narendra Modi for creation of an autonomous state for the hill districts of both Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao districts under Article 244 (A) of the Constitution of India reminding that it has been a long pending demand of the people but no positive effort have been made by the state government nor by the central government till date.
The students’ organizations also reminded PM of the promises made by then BJP president St Rajnath Singh at Bakaliaghat on 6 April 2014 and the promise made by Union Home Minister Nitin Gadkari for its implementation on being elected during his visit to Karbi Anglong 2016. “The statement cited above inspired the people of Dima Hasao and Karbi Anglong, but the much awaited dream for Autonomous State is yet to be fulfilled and still remains the dream and the people of both the districts is still waiting for implementation of the Article 244 (A) irrespective of caste, creed and religion,” the organizations stated.
On the controversial issue of Clause-8 of the BLT Accord, the organization said that as per the scheduled Tribes order 1950, the Bodos people are categorized as ST (P) and are still enjoying the said status and can’t be the ST(H) status in Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao District. “We are not against the bodos people but we are in the BLT Accord Clause- 8 as Bodos might be residing in both the twin hill district for the past several years and are indigenous people like us but they are n the sun of salt and can be given the same status with the Dimasa, Karbi, Hmar, Biate, and other hills tribes of Dima Hasao and Karbi Anglong,” the students’ organization pointed.
“In this connection we urge your honor to kindly take immediate steps for withdrawal BLT Accord Claim to protect the scheduled tribes order 1950 and so that the rights of the people of the Dima Hasao and Karbi Anglong is not discriminated,” concluded the organizations.
