DIPHU, Sept 09: In another good news for people of Karbi Anglong and Assam, Rajen Rongpi today became the first Assam javelin thrower to claim a bronze medal at the ongoing Asia Pacific Masters Game held at Penang, Malaysia, with a season’s best effort of 56.9m (880G) men 35 here.
The 35-year-old had made the final after achieving the qualifying mark in his throw; he was leaps ahead of the field with his very first throw. “It is a very important medal for me, I gave my best but I missed it by a centimeter. In my desperation for that, I tried so hard that I tumbled over in my last two attempts. But I am very happy and I have lot of competitions this year to achieve the personal best,” Rongpi said after his triumph.
Rongpi thus became only the second athletic from Karbi Anglong to claim a GMG medal at the international level the first being Pokhila Engtipi, who first won bronze in the 5000m race two days back. Rajen Rongpi was the son of Lakeswar Rongpi of Hanjanglangso. He was an ex-footballer and Ex-secretary of Hanjanglangso Football Association and KASA member.
