HALFLONG, Aug 8: The N.C. Hills Indigenous Students Forum (NCHISF) temporarily withdraw proposed indefinite hunger strike at Maligaon NF Railway  Headquarter, Guwahati and indefinite railway blockade in Dima Hasao scheduled to commence from August 09,2018 till the Government of Assam and the Railway Authority fulfil their promises.

ISF President David Keivom and others in a press meet held today at NCHISF office, Haflong said that the Government of Assam invited them to Guwahati for meeting; the letter was received by them on Tuesday. “I hope our demand would be fulfilled, but if the Government and the Railway authorities failed to concede with our demand to pay compensation to the Railway affected families, we will intensify an Indefinite Rail Blockade after the meeting.” Keivom added.

Mention may be made here that during the BG conversion around 500 families almost every family under Below Poverty Line (BPL) who earned living by daily wages land were affected. It had been a decade many of them are still in temporary settlement. Their only hope depends on the compensation of Rs. 4.58 crores estimated bill which was promised by the railway authorities to once again live their normal life. Around 100 hectare of Paddy field are also damaged due to dumping of soil which is indirect affect of the BG conversion and it is not included in the present estimate bill. Since 2007 the effected villager has been demanding for necessary compensation but only from February 2015 official meeting started to discuss the compensation issues.

The NCHISF had earlier submitted memorandum several times regarding the compensation and also had meeting with the railway authorities many times but no initiatives were taken till date by the railway authority which compelled the NCHISF to intensify their indefinite rail blockades.

Earlier on May 01, 2015, during peaceful rail blockades one villager whose land was affected sustained bullet injury. Till date no compensation was paid to the injured person from the railway authority although the railway assured to pay compensation to the victim.
