Diphu, Sept 11: As part of its resolution to pressurize the state government for completion of National Register of Citizens (NRC) works within this year, the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) Karbi Anglong District Union submitted a memorandum to the Karbi Anglong DC Adil Khan in Diphu today.
The memorandum of the organization was handed over to DC Adil Khan by its delegation team led by president i/c Shyamanta Gogoi, general secretary i/c Shorjun Hanse, central executive member Bedanta Saikia and other.
The organization demanded that a ‘dedicated team’ appointed by Supreme Court (SC) should be instituted and included to monitor and ensure the completion of the NRC work as per SC’s direction to complete it by December 2017.
Earlier in the memorandum, the students’ organization stated that people whose names are not registered in the list should be deported regardless of religion, caste or sex. The students’ organization also demanded the government and the district administration to provided dubious voter or doubtful voter list. In addition to this, the organization said that the process should free and fair and there should not be political interference in the matter and state government must comply with directives issued by the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court in its order on July 13, 2017, expressed its disappointment over the intervention in the matter of preparation and publication of the draft NRC stating that the Court has been in seisin of the matter for a fairly long time and has been monitoring the process directing the government to complete the process of publication of the draft NRC on or before December 31, 2017.
It may be mentioned that the AASU has been demanding deportation of foreigners came to Assam on or after March 25, 1971 as per the Assam Accord signed between AASU, AAGSP, Central and State Governments on the foreigner problem issue on August 15, 1985.
