AASU Demands Universities and Colleges to be Named after our Local Leaders

Correspondent; Bokajan, Aug 21: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) during a press conference held at CCI guest house strongly expressed its disapproval towards the decision of state education minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sharma who stated to establish 22 universities in Assam in the name of Pandit Dindayal Upaidhaya.

The issue surfaced after the Education Minister declared that 22 universities will be established in Assam within 4-5 years and it will be constructed in the name of Dr. Dindayal who is an ardent BJP leader.

AASU chief advisor Samurjjal Bhattacharya stated that AASU can never agree to his decision since there are many freedom fighters and noted educationists in Assam as well as in Karbi Anglong and it would be better if the university is named after them.

AASU advisor said, “There are many noted persons and freedom fighters in Assam who gave up their lives for the nation like Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, Joy Moti, Mula Gabhuru, Mamoni Raisom Goswami and in Karbi Anglong like Semson Sing Ingti, Thong Nokbe, Rongpharpi Rongbe, Rangsina Sarpo etc. It would be more useful and fruitful if colleges and universities are christened after them.”

“The BJP did very wrong by trying to bring anther figure when Assam as well as Karbi Anglong have many worthy persons. We are not against Pt. Dindayal Upadhaya but we want to have universities and colleges named after local leaders who are worthy,” AASU leaders stated.

The announcement made by state education minister establish 22 universities in the state in the name of Pandit Dindayal Upaidhaya has sparked outrage among the students’ and intellectuals, many pointing it as insult to the state and indigenous people of Assam.
